How to make the most out of Anki

    • Spaced Repetition: Anki uses spaced repetition algorithms to present cards just before you're likely to forget the information, optimizing long-term retention.

    • Active Recall: You actively retrieve information from memory, which strengthens the neural connections related to that knowledge.

    • Daily Practice: Anki’s power comes from regular, consistent practice. Set aside a specific time daily to go through your deck.

    • Short, Frequent Sessions: It’s better to review in short, frequent sessions rather than long, infrequent ones.

    • Interval Tweaks: Customise your intervals and steps in the settings to match your pace of learning. For example, adjusting the "learning steps" to introduce more frequent reviews on challenging cards can improve retention.

    • Lapses: Use Anki’s built-in “lapse” feature to handle cards you’ve forgotten. Cards that lapse go back to the learning phase for more frequent reviews.

    • Tagging: Use tags to group related cards (e.g., subjects, topics). This helps you study specific topics more easily.

    • Hierarchical Decks: If you have a large subject, create sub-decks for better organisation. This helps prevent overwhelming reviews from too many cards at once.

    • Enhance Anki: Add-ons can significantly improve Anki’s capabilities. Popular add-ons include:

      • Image Occlusion for anatomy or diagrams.

      • Review Heatmap to visualise your study habits.

      • AwesomeTTS for text-to-speech integration.

    • Daily Card Limits: Limit how many new cards you introduce daily. Too many new cards will overwhelm you. Start small (10-20 new cards per day), then adjust as you feel comfortable.

    • Balance: Focus on reviewing old cards before adding too many new ones. This keeps your daily review load manageable.
